Discipleship - Sr. Pastor Walter Davis
By definition, a disciple is a follower, one who accepts and assists in spreading the doctrines of another. The Greek word for disciple is the word “MATHETES” It means to accept in mind and life the views and practices of the teacher. In other words; to become a disciple of Jesus Christ, one must accept mentally His teachings and then practice or live out what he or she has been taught by the Master Teacher. A Christian disciple is also a person who accepts and assists in the spreading of the good news of Jesus Christ. Christian discipleship is the process by which disciples grow in the Lord Jesus Christ and are equipped by the Holy Spirit, who resides in our hearts, to overcome the pressures and trials of this present life and become more and more Christ like. This process requires believers to respond to the Holy Spirit’s prompting to examine their thoughts, words and actions and compare them with the Word of God. This requires that we read the Bible daily—studying it, praying over it, and obeying it. The disciple of Christ needs to be set apart from the world. Our focus should be on Jesus Christ our Lord and doing those things that pleases Him in every area of our lives. Being a disciple demands total allegiance and unwavering devotion. In summary, a disciple is someone who seeks so desperately to be like Jesus that they pattern their life after Him.
