The story begins in Luke 13:10. Jesus is teaching in the synagogue on the Sabbath. A woman is there who has been crippled by a spirit for 18 years. The Bible says that her back is so bent out of shape that she can’t straighten up by herself.
I believe her physical condition is a reminder of our spiritual condition. Ever since Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, the human race has been bent out of shape. We have fallen short of God’s standard of holiness and no matter how many good deeds we do, no matter how hard we try, we cannot straighten ourselves up without the power of the Lord. Without Jesus, we are just as paralyzed by sin as this woman is paralyzed by sickness.
The Bible teaches in Galatians 3:22 that ALL (the whole world) is under sin, so that the promise by faith can be given to them that believe.
We needed someone in our lives who was more powerful than the devil. We needed someone in our lives who has the power to wash away our sins and remove the wall of separation that stood between us and God. We needed someone who would reach down and save us in every way a person could be saved. We needed to be saved spiritually, emotionally, physically and financially, the list goes on and on.
That’s what Jesus did for us! That’s what He did for this lady in Luke. While He’s giving His sermon, He looks out into the sea of faces. When He sees the woman, he stops the sermon. He calls out to her and says, "Come here." She gets up and hobbles to the front of the synagogue. Jesus then says to her, "Woman, you art loosed from your infirmity." He then put his hands on her and the power of Almighty God goes through her body and she stands up straight for the first time in 18 years.
The Bible says she immediately glorified God.
